Despite the summer sun featuring quite consistently in our weekends at the moment, there are some days when you feel Autumn’s breeze come a knockin’.

So let’s take a lesson from Robert Baden-Powell and help our men ‘Be Prepared’, with some of these transitional pieces from Uniqlo and Burtons.

Uniqlo has a bunch of weird and wonderful t-shirts for hot summer days and cooler times when teamed with a sleek leather jacket or a bit of messy denim.

This black M v-neck t-shirt is a great representation of a classic character and is currently reduced from £12.99 to £7.99.

For those of you who have men with slightly more obscure taste in animation this white manga/anime print tee is the perfect statement; and the price for the nearsighted genius Dr Slump Arale has also been reduced to £7.99.

Burton is offering some cosier pieces with the coming season in mind such as this grey/red check hooded shirt for £32. The hood adds a bit of a casual vibe to an altogether versatile shirt.

If your man prefers to layer up with some simple jumpers then take a look at this Oxford blue cotton rich jumper (£20), which is part of a deal offering a mix of casual shirts, jumpers and denim – two for £36.

Now there’s no excuse for leaving your man high and dry when those summer thunderstorms come in or the sun starts to go back into hiding. An important thing to keep in mind as well is that new hoodies and shirts for him, means more mix and match options for you!

In Sainsbury’s the other day, as I was waiting in the queue, a man caught my eye.

A regular, good-looking guy, (the kind that would generally catch my eye) but there was something different about this one.

Decked out in jeans, flip-flops, a shocking red and yellow tee paired with bright shades and a statement red watch – this guy was a show-stopper.

It made me wonder why men don’t wear bright colours more often. Sure – there are plenty of guys out there dressed up to the nines every day of the week, but I feel like this trend could translate to the everyday man as well.

If you think your man could benefit from some new items enabling him to keep up with your fashionista ways, then summer is the perfect time to encourage him to have some fun with colour for a change.

A great idea for men that want to add some colour to their look right now is the addition of a statement item, accessory or clothing.

This will make their outfit pop allowing them to stand out and bring some summery cheer without looking like Joseph and his Technicolor Dreamcoat!

At Oki-ni there is a fantastic range of stand out items, some more garish than others… and below are some of our picks from the collection.

I love love love these classic Timex watches (£50), which bring a real 80’s neon vibe to any wrist and look uber cool. There are eight colours to choose from and I think that one of these will brighten your man’s mood and wardrobe.

Another great colourful accessory are these Illesteva Leonard sunglasses (£125). Although they are a bit pricey, the round frame will help to bring a Cuban feel to an outfit and get this man in the mood for some Cuba Libre’s and fun in the sun.

These Acne Agra sandals (£165) are a bit darker but I think the style would really draw your eye and they look extremely comfy!

Finally for a bit of comedy value, I had to add this wonderful Knit (£60) into the collection. It is definitely reminiscent of Joseph’s Technicolor Dreamcoat but I do think it’s rather wonderful. Can be worn ironically or enthusiastically – either way an impression is bound to be made!

So let us not worry about who can wear what and encourage the man in your life to stand out and be counted because well… why not?!

British politics is big news this week, everyone is talking about the results of the general election as the events unfolded last Thursday night. You’ve all had your chance to vote but which way would you sway if it was down to you to choose what the hot colours for menswear are going to be for this season? I’ve picked three of the best red, blue and yellow looks to help you make your mind up.

This trendy red checked flannel shirt from the Lee 101 collection is available at Urban Outfitters. It’s great for this season as he can roll the sleeves up which shows the nice detail of the contrast check interior and the fabric is not too heavy for summer days in the sunshine. He can button it up to the top or wear it open neck depending on his style.

Lyle & Scott are very consistent in creating easily wearable and stylish street fashion but they still keep their designs simple and that’s why they are still cool season after season. This yellow crew neck t-shirt is a good example of the understated edginess which Lyle & Scott are known for. I like this t-shirt because it has been cut in a way which lets it hang loose on the body and it can be worn with jeans or shorts. Priced at a very tempting £35 from Asos it’s not going to make a big dent in his bank balance.

I’ve also picked out this unisex pacific blue tie which is a nice surprise from American Apparel because it is usually known for its t-shirts, hoodies, lycra and casual wear. Smarten your man up with this simple tie which is great for the office and will make him look a little bit more ‘conservative’ but not in a David Cameron kind of way!

Pick your favourite for your man to show your political pride, or put em together to cause a little stir!

One of the trends which I spotted at Alternative fashion week was an unusual collection of kilts or ‘skilts’ which are styled and adapted for the modern man. They are made by a small company based in Bethnal Green, you can check out their website here . Founders of the company Richard and Max coined the term ‘skilt’ to describe how their designs are a ‘fusion of the kilt and traditional gentleman’s tailoring’, creating a modern London twist on an otherwise traditional Scottish fashion. Using this look as a starting point, I’m going to give you tips on how your man can achieve a bit of an alternative punk look fit for everyday wear.

Get him kitted out with these Fred Perry checked shorts which are a great example of how to wear tartan without it being too overpowering and garish. Go for something simple on top by pairing these shorts with a plain white tee (only £7 from Topman!) and a pair of slim black braces which are also a bit of a steal at £12. No punk look would be complete without a pair of Dr Martens, I’ve chosen these classic black 8 eye boots. They are definitely ‘on trend’ for this season as high street stores such as Urban Outfitters recently celebrated the 50th birthday of the Air Ware boots at the beginning of this month.

There are plenty of army surplus style accessories available on the high street at the moment which will help polish off your man’s outfit and tie in nicely with the military look which has also been a key trend of recent months. Grab him one of these Renewal Cold War Man Bags which are available from Urban Outfitters now priced at £14 reduced from £28. It’s a great size to keep all his essentials safe whilst also looking macho enough that he won’t be worried about what his mates might say.

Want to impress him with your trend/style knowledge? Send him a link to the Dr Martens 50th anniversary website where they have music downloads, cool videos and lots of fun stuff for him to do while you’re kitting him out.

This month it’s all about stripes, anchors, gold bling and tattoos but it’s not just the girls who can have all the fun with the nautical look.

Here are some tips for kitting out your man in this season’s style without making him look like a pirate. The trick? Don’t overdo it; just keep it simple!

There are a lot of stripy t-shirts out in the shops at the moment, and I’ve picked out this stylish white and black one from Topman, only £12 which looks great with these skinny faded wash jeans (£36) which are featured in Topman’s ‘latest trend’ range on their website, which means they have just hit the shops.

Polish the look off with a pair of deck shoes (£54.99) stick with low key colours or check out the extensive range of crazy bright shades also available at Office.

Tesco is currently showcasing a whole selection men’s and women’s clothing that’s been discounted by up to 50%, but the stand out collection is the men’s winter woolly warmers, all under £20!

All of the wool blend jumpers look much more expensive than they are, they’re thick and lovely for snuggling and the prices are unbeatable.

They’re great ideas for Christmas, but they’re so cheap you could even spoil your man before the big day.

The F&F Collection Cable Knit Cardigan with a button front is an online exclusive, and is now half price, at £12.50.

The narrow collar means it’s better for slimmer guys, so if you’ve got a bigger man, go for a hooded knit to balance out his midsection. I love the F&F Cable knitted zip-through hooded top, £17.50

What about the guy who doesn’t really buy a lot of stuff for himself, but enjoys the finer things on occasion, and is a little bit stylish with a great sense of humour?

That – we can tackle. And this year, we’re all about the statement watch.

Black to the future

It’s stylish, it’s unique, it’s modern and it’s retro, all in one. The architectural Black Dice Hustle Watch, £74.99, features a genuine leather strap, an analogue configuration, and a whole lot of attitude.

This is a chunky fashion statement thats modernistic design means your guy could still wear it years from now.

It’s water resistant to 5 ATM, which is a bonus for forgetful blokes, and in black, it will go with everything.

It was acceptable in the Eighties

Everybody’s going retro and your boyfriend should be no exception. Urban Outfitters is the king when it comes to urban cool gear, and we’re loving the look of the Casio Mens Silver Watch. It’s reminiscent of your dad’s wristwear in 1988, which means it’s perfect for the here and now. £35 and you’ve got yourself a slice of history…thats brand new.

Let’s get digital

If your guy is always on the go and doesn’t have time for silly things like reading analogue watches, go digital.

The key to buying a more sporty watch is to choose a piece that can be worn in and outside the gym with comfort and style rolled into one.

This Diesel Digital Watch is a tidy £67.53, with a doubled-edged design that lends itself to a whole host of boy situations.

The polyurethane strap and simple timer mechanism are perfect for working out, while the sleek watch face is smart enough for work and play.

The two-year warranty and durability of the design will ensure he’ll get a whole lot of wear out of it, meaning you get more bang for your buck.

If you want to buy your guy a chrono-gift this Christmas, stick with an adjustable strap if you have any doubts about his wrist size.

It’s not easy to whip out a tape measure without raising suspicion, so if you have no way to get the data, don’t buy him a fixed size piece.

If you do, however, go for a link strap style, you can get a link taken out at the jewellers fairly inexpensively, but if it’s too small to start with, you’re out of luck.

Heed my words…I speak from experience!

A watch is a great gift for your special guy, especially if you want something with a bit of sentimental weight, and he’s not a jewellery kind of dude.

It’s the last thing he puts on before the leaves the house, and it’s the one thing he’ll wear everytime he’s out.

The coat maketh the man.

He can spend all the time he likes on his outfit underneath; but his coat is the centrepiece; it’s what everyone sees – the billboard advertising his personal style.

We like trends here at Thinpurse.com, but when it comes to coats; classic is the best value-for-money choice, hands down.

If you buy him the right coat, he’ll hang on to it for years to come, and he’ll always look the picture of style in the colder months. Here are our top picks.

The Pea Coat

The classic pea coat is a great choice for bigger guys; as they can swamp men with smaller frames. On trend without being slavish, the pea coat picks up on a subtle nautical vibe due to its origins adorning sailors out on the open sea.

You want to look for a good wool, or wool blend fabric in a pea coat, because of it’s shorter length, it needs to offer optimal warmth over it’s limited surface. A high collar allows for a tucked in scarf, and the key is to find a style that looks just as good buttoned-up as it does open. A good fit is key where this is concerned. Pea coats are notoriously boxy.

I’m a fan of this G-Star Decoy Wool Pea Coat, available at Urban Outfitters. The shell is a high percentage wool blend, and it’s priced at £175; resonable, considering.

The Crombie Coat

Formal, with an edge, the crombie coat is a great option if you’re slowly working your guy into a more stylish wardrobe.

Usually a crombie will be around 3/4 length, single-breasted, with a hint of drama.

Crombies look great on guys of all sizes, but certain shapes can benefit from the smaller lapel usually found on crombies; the more shoulder surface visible, the more chance of the illusion, or enhancement, of a nice broad shoulder.

This Smart Crombie Coat from New Look is a great example of this; with the small lapel and shoulder detail combining for great effect. With a lesser percentage of wool in the shell, this coat is very affordable, with a price point of £60. It’s great value, and a great style.

The Funnel Neck Coat

This the the most fashion-forward option of the bunch; but, of course, it’s a style that won’t date.

A funnel neck coat is a nod to the military trend, in a design that doesn’t allow for a scarf, but offers up a very masculine frame. The double-breasted wrap-over collar means an extra layer against the wind, and mid-length of this Autograph Wool Blend Funnel Military will keep the chill off his kidneys.

At £129, the high wool content means this is a good quality, good value coat. This style would look best on slim guys; as the funnel neck could cause a barrell effect.

The overall look is really smart, without being too fussy, and it has a great, youthful edge. The button-down epaulettes are also a great feature, adding height to the shoulder.

When buying a coat online for your guy’s Christmas gift, remember to check his measurements beforehand. Find a well-fitting jacket he already wears, and steal the information on the tag.

It also pays to take note of his current wardrobe choices. Think about what style would look best with his favourite outfits, and get your head around what he likes, and doesn’t like.

Stick to your budget, in true Thinpurse style, but remember, you get what you pay for, and a quality coat really is worth the investment.
