When it first launched, Uniqlo was a place where you would go and buy staple items for your wardrobe such as basic t-shirts, vests, jeans and the odd jacket or packet of pants. In recent years they have really pushed their designs up a notch on the fashion scale so it’s now a destination on the high street (as Mary Portas would say) rather than somewhere people just pop into every now and again.
The reason why I’m so excited is because Uniqlo have just launched a new range of t-shirts which feature Disney characters, cool illustrations and designs which experiment with different type-faces and graphics called UT All Stars. Some of their latest range is modelled by uber trendy stars from the music and fashion business seen in this month’s pages of I-D and Dazed & Confused. The UT All Stars range is definitely worth watching out for, not on the catwalk, but on the street.
Natasha Khan aka Bat-for-Lashes models this fun Minnie Mouse pink t-shirt, priced at only £6.99 which is part of a Uniqlo’s collaboration with Disney. Natasha shows how you can turn this girly t-shirt into an indie rock chick look with dark eye make up and a strikingly bold necklace.
I also like this ‘Girly flavor’ long sleeved sweater because it enables you to work the casual I-just-got-out-of -bed–but-I-still–look-cool look for the bargainous price of £6.99 which is perfect for wearing with skinny jeans. Designed by a singer called Chara who made her musical debut in 1991 with her single “Heaven,” this is another example of how high street stores are looking to create a fusion between fashion and music. Here’s a tip to rock this sweater: simply roll up the sleeves on the sweater and tie the bottom of it up in a bun knot. Wear it with high waisted denim shorts and finish it off with a simple gold chain necklace if you want the Hoxton look.
Last but not least, this grey three quarter length sleeved hoodie reduced to £6.99 is simple, but the use of text is playful and for this price it allows you to experiment a bit with your wardrobe if hoodies aren’t normally your thing. To create this look, Uniqlo have worked with Berlin-based publisher and media agency Gestalten who have created a range of t-shirts and hoodies which incorporate different type-faces and phrases from ‘a motley crew of collaborating artists’.
So why not unleash your creative side and get yourself down to Uniqlo this weekend to snap up some of the UT All Stars range! Check out their stuff for your man, too. A guy can never go wrong in a flash fitted T.
