Winter Boots: Knees Up

by Hannah, on October 27, 2009

I have a dream. Me, in a short, knit dress, and some fierce thigh high boots, strutting down the street like I own the place.

But, there is a conflict within me. To heel, or not to heel? There’s something a little Pretty Woman about a high heel, high cut boot combination. But a flat option might have me looking like a fly-fisherman. I could take them below the knee, or to the calf, but I’m kinda hung up on the high-fashion look of an over-the-knee style.

There are also booties to consider, of course, which are fine and dandy for now, but you can’t beat the kind of footwear that you can wear over woolly socks. I’m torn. We’re launching into winter without a moment’s notice, and I am currently without boots. This kind of decision is not one to be made lightly – especially when you’re on a budget.

I’m officially on the hunt. I have the dream, now I just have to find the boot that fits.

River Island has grabbed my attention. Could this be the perfect boot? The Ruched Hi Boot, at £99.99. They’re leather, with a cute little bow feature on the side for balance, mid to high heel, but there’s only one size left. It’s a 3. Dammit.

Don’t like the different colours. Fail by River Island.

Oasis, Oasis, Oasis. These are not just Platform Overknee Boots. These are Pretty Woman boots. Just no.

Faith is up next, and my high expectations are reached with a plethora of suitable flat styles at my fingertips. The Marley Boot, The Meryl (just £60), and the Mienna.

But…they’re flat. Do I want flat? Flat boots are lovely and all, but give me a pair of heels, and I’m unstoppable. (except when there are cobblestones involved)

And why is it that the best are always so expensive? If you’re doing boots, you should do it right; but these Derby Boots from French Connection are painfully perfect, if it wasn’t for the £200 price tag. The matte finish 100% leather outer and ruched ankle keep them G-rated and the cute 3″ heel is do-able; if not a little short. But I must be able to do better than £200!

How about £65?

Urban Outfitters are offering up a style from London Rebel with a high stiletto heel, pointed toe, and they look like torture. Moving right along…

Oh – I’ve found a goodie – The Bertie Royal Oak mid heel, zip back boots are £150, but they’re hot stuff.

Full leather, with a scalloped edge bumping up over the knee, the heel is comfortable, but still high, and the rounded toe will save you from crippling pain half way through the day. The design of the boot is simple; you could wear them with anything, but at the back, things get just a little saucy with a full length zip feature. Have I found the one?
